ID Requirements for Marriage
The usual ID and supporting documents needed for marriage in Canberra, in plain language.
Before a marriage can happen, your celebrant must be satisfied about your identity and your date and place of birth.
The usual documents
Most couples use:
- a birth certificate or passport for date and place of birth
- a passport, driver’s licence, or other photo ID for identity
If you have been married before
You also need proof that the previous marriage ended, such as:
- a divorce order
- a death certificate
If your name has changed
Bring the document that links your current legal name to the name on your birth certificate or other documents.
If your documents are not in English
Translations may be needed. Keep the originals as well.
Best next step
If you are not sure whether your documents are enough, ask before the ceremony day. It is much easier to fix paperwork early than late.
